Composite bonding is a minimally invasive cosmetic dental procedure used to improve the appearance and function of teeth by applying a tooth-colored resin directly to the tooth surface. It is commonly chosen to repair small chips or cracks, close gaps between teeth, reshape uneven or worn teeth, cover discoloration, or protect exposed tooth roots caused by gum recession. Because the procedure preserves natural tooth structure and typically does not require drilling or anesthesia, it is considered one of the most conservative cosmetic dental treatments available. The procedure is usually completed in a single visit. The dentist begins by lightly roughening the surface of the tooth and applying a bonding agent to help the resin adhere securely. A carefully matched composite resin is then applied in layers and sculpted to achieve the desired shape and appearance. Once the dentist is satisfied with the contour, a special curing light is used to harden the material. The bonded area is then trimmed, smoothed, and polished so it blends seamlessly with the surrounding teeth. Composite bonding offers a natural-looking and affordable alternative to veneers or crowns, particularly for minor cosmetic concerns. While not as long-lasting as porcelain restorations, bonded resin typically lasts 5 to 7 years and can last longer with good oral hygiene and care. Patients are advised to avoid biting hard objects and to maintain regular dental checkups to extend the life of the bonding.
