A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fully covers a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its strength, shape, size, and appearance while protecting it from further damage. Often compared to a protective helmet for the tooth, a crown is commonly used after root canal treatment, severe decay, fractures, or to complete a dental implant. Once cemented in place, the crown restores normal chewing function and improves the tooth’s overall appearance, allowing it to blend naturally with surrounding teeth. Dental crowns can be made from several materials depending on strength, location, and cosmetic needs. Porcelain and ceramic crowns closely mimic natural tooth color and are often used for front teeth, while zirconia and metal alloy crowns offer exceptional durability and are commonly chosen for back teeth that endure heavy biting forces. With proper care, crowns are highly durable and can last many years, often a decade or longer. The crown process usually requires two dental visits. During the first visit, the dentist evaluates the tooth, takes X-rays if needed, reshapes the tooth to make room for the crown, and takes impressions to create a precise fit. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is fabricated in a dental laboratory. At the second visit, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is carefully fitted and cemented into place, restoring both function and appearance.
