Dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement solution that uses titanium posts surgically placed into the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots. These implants act as a strong, stable foundation for artificial teeth such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. Because titanium is biocompatible, the implant gradually fuses with the surrounding jawbone in a process called osseointegration, creating a secure anchor that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth root. Unlike removable dentures, dental implants do not slip, shift, or rely on neighboring teeth for support. The dental implant process occurs in stages. First, the dentist or oral surgeon places the titanium implant into the jawbone through a minor surgical procedure. Over the next several months—typically between two and six months—the implant integrates with the bone, becoming a permanent part of the jaw. Once healing is complete, a small connector piece called an abutment is attached to the implant. Finally, a custom-made crown (or other prosthetic tooth) is secured to the abutment, restoring the appearance and function of the missing tooth. Dental implants offer significant long-term benefits beyond tooth replacement. They allow normal chewing and speaking, closely mimic natural teeth aesthetically, and help preserve jawbone health by preventing bone loss that commonly follows tooth loss. With proper oral hygiene and routine dental care, implants are highly durable and can last for decades or even a lifetime. They are ideal for individuals missing one or more teeth who want a stable, long-lasting solution, provided there is adequate jawbone support or the ability to undergo bone grafting if needed.
