Extracapsular cataract extraction is a cataract surgery technique used when the cataract is too dense to be safely treated with phacoemulsification. In this procedure, the cloudy lens is removed in one piece while preserving the outer lens capsule for placement of an artificial lens. Prior to surgery, detailed imaging and eye measurements are performed to evaluate cataract density and determine the safest surgical approach. ECCE is typically recommended in advanced cataract cases or in settings where phacoemulsification is not appropriate. The procedure requires a larger incision than modern cataract techniques and is performed under local or regional anesthesia. The artificial lens is placed within the remaining capsule to restore vision. Recovery from ECCE is longer than with phacoemulsification, but the procedure remains a reliable and effective option for restoring sight in complex cataract cases.
