Laser photocoagulation is a retinal laser treatment used to seal leaking blood vessels or treat abnormal retinal tissue. It is commonly used in conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, and certain retinal vascular disorders. Prior to treatment, the eye is carefully examined and dilated to identify the affected retinal areas. Imaging may be used to guide precise laser application. During the procedure, controlled laser energy is applied to targeted areas of the retina. The laser creates small burns that stabilize the retina, reduce leakage, or prevent progression of disease. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting and is generally well tolerated. Laser photocoagulation helps preserve existing vision and prevent further retinal damage. While it may not restore lost vision, it plays a critical role in preventing disease progression.
