Lingual braces are an orthodontic treatment that straightens teeth using brackets and wires placed on the inner (tongue-facing) surfaces of the teeth, making them virtually invisible from the outside. The process begins with a consultation and detailed digital scans or impressions of the teeth, which are used to create a precise 3D model. Based on this model, a dental lab custom-fabricates brackets and archwires designed specifically to fit the unique shape of each tooth’s inner surface, a process that can take several weeks. Once the appliances are ready, the orthodontist bonds the customized brackets to the backs of the teeth using a specialized placement tray for accuracy, then threads an archwire through the brackets to apply gentle, continuous pressure. As with traditional braces, this pressure gradually moves the teeth into proper alignment over time. Patients return for regular adjustment visits, usually every 6 to 8 weeks, so the orthodontist can modify the wires and guide tooth movement. Because lingual braces sit close to the tongue, patients often experience temporary speech changes (such as a mild lisp) and tongue irritation during the first few weeks while adjusting. Oral hygiene can be more challenging due to limited visibility and access, making diligent brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings especially important. Treatment time typically ranges from 12 to 36 months, depending on the complexity of the case. After the braces are removed, retainers are required to maintain the corrected alignment and prevent teeth from shifting.
