Quadriceps tendon repair is a surgical procedure performed to restore the connection between the quadriceps muscles and the kneecap (patella) after a partial or complete tendon tear. The quadriceps tendon plays a critical role in straightening the knee, walking, standing from a seated position, and climbing stairs, and a complete rupture typically makes these movements impossible without surgical intervention. The process usually begins with an orthopedic evaluation after a sudden injury, often caused by a forceful fall, jump, or awkward landing. Imaging such as X-rays or MRI may be used to confirm the diagnosis and determine whether the tear is partial or complete. Surgery is generally recommended for complete ruptures or significant partial tears that impair knee function. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision over the front of the knee to access the torn tendon. The tendon is carefully reattached to the top of the kneecap using strong sutures passed through small drill holes or secured with suture anchors. In some cases, additional sutures, wires, or graft tissue may be used to reinforce the repair, particularly if the tendon tissue is weakened or shortened. The goal is to restore the normal tension of the tendon so the knee can extend properly. After surgery, the knee is typically immobilized in a brace locked in extension to protect the repair during early healing. Crutches are commonly used, with weight-bearing gradually increased based on the surgeon’s guidance. Physical therapy begins early with controlled motion to prevent stiffness, followed by progressive strengthening of the quadriceps and surrounding muscles. Recovery is gradual, with most patients regaining functional movement over several months and full recovery often taking 6 to 12 months, depending on the severity of the injury and adherence to rehabilitation.
