Tear duct surgery, medically known as dacryocystorhinostomy, is performed to treat blocked tear ducts that cause excessive tearing, recurrent infections, or eye irritation. When tears cannot drain properly, they may overflow onto the face or become trapped, leading to infection. Before surgery, imaging and diagnostic testing are used to confirm the location and cause of the blockage. This allows the surgeon to plan the most effective surgical approach. During the procedure, a new drainage pathway is created to allow tears to drain normally into the nasal cavity. The surgery may be performed through a small external incision or endoscopically through the nose, depending on the case. Tear duct surgery restores proper tear drainage, relieves chronic tearing, and reduces the risk of infection with high long-term success rates.
