Traditional braces are a time-tested orthodontic treatment used to straighten teeth and correct bite problems by gradually applying controlled pressure over time. The process begins with an initial consultation, during which the orthodontist examines the teeth and jaws, takes X-rays, photographs, and impressions or digital scans, and develops a personalized treatment plan. This planning stage helps determine how teeth need to move and whether additional appliances may be required for more complex alignment issues. Once treatment begins, small metal brackets are bonded to the front of each tooth using a dental adhesive. An archwire is then threaded through the brackets and secured in place with elastic bands (ligatures). The archwire applies gentle, continuous pressure that slowly shifts teeth into their proper positions. In some cases, additional appliances such as elastics, springs, or headgear may be used to address jaw alignment or bite correction. Patients return for regular adjustment appointments every 4 to 6 weeks. During these visits, the orthodontist tightens or replaces the archwire, changes elastic bands, and monitors progress. Mild soreness or pressure is common for a few days after adjustments, but this usually resolves quickly. Total treatment time varies depending on the complexity of the case but typically lasts between 1 and 3 years. Once the teeth are properly aligned, the braces are removed, and retainers are prescribed to maintain the results and prevent teeth from shifting back over time.
