Trigger finger release is a minor surgical procedure performed to treat trigger finger (stenosing tenosynovitis), a condition in which a finger or thumb catches, locks, or becomes stuck in a bent position. This occurs when inflammation, thickening, or a small nodule develops in the flexor tendon or its surrounding sheath, most commonly at the A1 pulley in the palm. The narrowed pulley prevents the tendon from gliding smoothly, leading to pain, popping sensations, and mechanical locking during finger movement. Surgery is typically recommended when symptoms persist despite rest, splinting, anti-inflammatory medications, or corticosteroid injections. The procedure is usually performed as an outpatient surgery under local anesthesia, meaning the patient remains awake but pain-free. The goal of surgery is to release the tight A1 pulley, creating more space for the tendon to move freely. There are two primary surgical techniques. In an open trigger finger release, the surgeon makes a small incision in the palm at the base of the affected finger and carefully cuts the pulley. In a percutaneous release, a needle is inserted through the skin to divide the pulley without an incision, though this technique is not suitable for all patients. During the procedure, once the pulley is released, the surgeon asks the patient to move the finger to confirm that the tendon now glides smoothly without catching. The surgery itself is brief, often taking less than 20 minutes. If an incision is made, it is closed with sutures and covered with a light dressing. After surgery, patients typically go home the same day and are encouraged to begin gentle finger motion almost immediately to prevent stiffness. Some soreness, swelling, or tenderness at the incision site is common during early recovery. Heavy gripping, forceful use of the hand, and repetitive motions are usually restricted for several weeks. In some cases, hand therapy or guided exercises are recommended to restore strength and full range of motion. Most patients experience rapid symptom relief and excellent long-term outcomes, with a low risk of recurrence.
