A dental veneer procedure is a cosmetic dental treatment designed to improve the appearance of teeth by covering their front surface with thin, custom-made shells made of porcelain or composite resin. Veneers are commonly used to correct cosmetic concerns such as chipped or worn teeth, discoloration that does not respond to whitening, uneven shapes, small gaps, or mild misalignment. The goal is to create a brighter, more uniform, and natural-looking smile while preserving as much of the natural tooth as possible. The process typically begins with a consultation and treatment planning visit, during which the dentist evaluates your teeth, discusses your aesthetic goals, and helps choose the appropriate veneer material and shade. To prepare the tooth, a very thin layer of enamel—usually about 0.5 millimeters—is removed from the front surface to ensure the veneer fits properly and does not appear bulky. An impression or digital scan of the prepared teeth is then taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where the veneers are custom fabricated to match your smile. While the permanent veneers are being made, temporary veneers are often placed to protect the prepared teeth and maintain appearance. At the second appointment, the temporary veneers are removed, and the teeth are cleaned and lightly etched to improve bonding. The dentist then permanently bonds the veneers to the teeth using dental cement, which is hardened with a special curing light. Final adjustments are made to ensure proper fit, bite alignment, and natural aesthetics. Porcelain veneers are highly durable and stain-resistant, while composite veneers may be placed directly and require less tooth preparation. The procedure is generally well tolerated, with minimal discomfort and only temporary sensitivity for some patients.
